Why Drawing is so important for 3D artists!

by Hayden Falzon

Time is one of the greatest enemies of any artist! But for us 3D artists it is even more so. Things take so much longer when a z dimension is added to the equation. It is for this reason that I believe that drawing can be so benifical to a practicing 3D artist.

The age old adage of practice makes perfects couldn't be more right if it wanted to. Alas... the reasons for such are often only atributed to our success. But very little to our failures.

Practice facilitates failure and failure leads to learning. So I beleive that we must fail faster! But that is hard to do when practicing takes so long. For exmample if you want to practice how to texture paint, a commen approuch would be to create a model, then UV unwrap it and then texture paint.

That is 3 unnessary steps!

“Every artist was first an amateur”

Ralph Waldo Emerson.

In music, there is a performance type called Etude, the french word for "Study". In it a composer will create a short and often reptitive peice of music that focuses on one technique. The song then serves as a way for the "artist" to practice and hone their skills in that area.

So we as 3D artists must do the same!

Instead of creating a model just to get to the part that we wish to practice, we should just download a practice model and use that! Not only will that save time but also allow us to fail faster.

Drawing is a 2D artform that has very similar roots to 3D. We have to worry about; shading, form, emtion, shape etc.

This relationship is why I am of the belief that drawing is and can be used as an etude for my 3D art, especially in the areas of design and composition.

A drawing will take considerbly less time to create than most 3D art as we are only working in 2 out of our 3 dimensions that we expirence (I would hate to be a higher dimensional being!) It also means there are far less varibles of which we have to keep track of. (And the ui of drawing software isn't an eye sore)

It is for these reasons that I beleive that drawing is so important as it can help us become better 3d artists! But don't take my word for it, practice see what comes from it! And if you disagree with what I have said, please be sure to tell me why comments bellow I am always looking to expand my horizons!
